ATACAMITE
ETYMOLOGY: It was named after it was first described (De Gallizen, 1801) in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.
 
CRYSTAL SYSTEM : Rhombic.
 
PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Secondary.
 
MINERAL CLASS: Halogen.
 
CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: Cu 2(OH) 3Cl
 
HARDNESS: 3-4 in the Mohs.

MINERALOGY: A mineral from the group of Halides (Mineral formed by the combination of metals with halogens [are those in the group 17 of the periodic system. F, Cl, Br, I and At]. Mineral soft, heavy, perfectly peelable and conchoidal fracture, transparent to translucent, vitreous enamel brightness between and typically dark green. It is a mineral that appears crystallized in prismatic crystals, striated parallel to the axis "c" to form crystalline aggregates. They also form fibrous aggregates or it comes in granular masses.

 


MYTHOLOGY: In the Chile northwest, before the arrival of the Spaniards, the mountain tribes of the Andes, producing copper mines worked so hard with steel. This activity occurred as a gift from the gods. More specifically, there was an Indian sage Atacama was able to defeat the god of metals (El Condor de Oro) who, with the proven value, offered one of three mines: Two gold and copper. Legend has it that the indigenous thought keep the gold it would be nothing but selfishness and instead, the copper would help his people. God built the final size of the Chuquicamata mine in the distance the Indian context throwing his spear.
