Unakite

ETYMOLOGY: Called "Ukana" by the Cherokee tribe before the white people, takes the name from Ukana Mountains north of Tennessee, as this mineral was discovered there.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Not defined.

CLASS MINERAL: Silicate (sorosilicate).

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: SiO2 (Quartz) Ca2 + (Fe, Al) Al 2 [O | OH | SiO4 | Si2O7] (epidote), K [AlSi3O8] (Orthoclase).
 
HARDNESS: 6.5 - 7  on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: North Carolina (USA), South Africa, Sierra Leone, Brazil and China.

 
 

MINERALOGY: The opaque granite rock composed mainly of quartz, feldspar and green epidote, is a very compact and hard rock, green epidote that dominates Unakite rock is the result of metasomatic alteration of plagioclase. However, orthoclase and quartz crystals do not suffer any alteration. The Unakite is in pebbles and boulders of glacial stacking rocks beach.

 


MYTHOLOGYThe ukanita as rock is added so variable as its appearance, so does not belong to any definite crystallographic system, nor has its own chemical formula. The Ukana called the Cherokee tribe before the arrival of white, takes its name from the mountains north of Tennessee Ukana
