ETYMOLOGY: By the military H. von Prehn.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: Ca2Al2 [(OH) 2 I SiO10].

HARDNESS:  6- 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: Australia, China, Scotland, South Africa, USA.

MINERALOGY: The hydrothermal origin in cavities or recesses of basic, especially crystalline slates and volcanic rocks, usually presented as tabular crystals forming ridges. It can also occur as aggregates or crusts reniforrnes, botroidales, globular, etc. It is an aluminosilicate of calcium and aluminum, although some aluminum may be substituted by up to 7% iron.

MYTHOLOGY: The prehnite was first discovered in the eighteenth century (1788) and was named after the military H. von Prehn, who brought the ore Cape of Good Hope (South Africa). In Dauphine (France) aggregates are magnificent barrel-shaped. Prehnite is associated with titanite, zeolites, plagioclase, calcite, diopside.
