ETYMOLOGY: It comes from the greek aima = blood.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Trigonal / cubic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Tertiary.

CLASS MINERAL:  Oxides.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: Fe2O3 + Mg, Ti + (Al, Cr, Mn, Si, H2O).

HARDNESS: 5.5 - 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

MINERALOGY: Hematite is one of the most common mineral in the earth, is formed from hydrothermal solutions, which form small crystals, secondarily is formed in the oxidation of iron ore, a red scabs finely distributed, by decomposition of the rocks.

 

MYTHOLOGY: It was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a healing stone for the formation of blood and cut bleeding, the variety speculate in ancient times was used to make mirrors, it is also found in many Egyptian tombs. The earthy variety was used to mark cattle. Also it is known as the stone of the pilgrims, since formerly was a large reservoir near Santiago de Compostela and pilgrims were taken to one of his way back as a souvenir. It looks like a shiny metal, but when it is submerged in water dyed blood red, the Greeks gave the name "Haimatites" which comes from "Haima" blood.
