Charoite

ETYMOLOGY: Chara River (Siberia) source of this mineral also chary by the Russian word meaning "charm", "magic".

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Monoclinic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Tertiary.

MINERAL CLASS: Phyllosilicates.

MINERAL ELEMENTS CHEMICAL FORMULA: (Ca, Na) 4 (K, Sr, Ba) 2 [(OH, F) 2Si9O22]

HARDENESS: 5-6 on the Mohs scale .

MINERALOGY: The Charoite is formed from limestone through the process of contact metamorphism. It has a metasomatic origin in areas of contact between igneous and metamorphic rocks from the union of magmatic solutions with mineral elements of the adjacent rock. Because it is a relatively common phenomenon gemological not completely clear why the distribution is so limited. Apparently the limestone that particular area has unique chemical properties, like intrusive rocks.


MYTHOLOGY: It was initially found 325 miles north tip of Lake Baikal, in 1940 and was called "purple stone", where until 1978 it was introduced to the market in Western stones with Charoite name.
