ETYMOLOGYIt comes from the Arabic word "azure", which in turn comes from the Persian word "lazhward" meaning blue.

MINERALOGY: The azurite is a basic carbon copper is formed by water from acid rain in areas of oxidation, owes its name to its blue color, vitreous luster, is presented together with malachite in copper deposits, it is formed by 69.2% copper (Cu 2+), 25.6% carbon dioxide (CO2) and 5.2% water.

 

MYTHOLOGYThe azurite also known by the name "chesilita" refers to the town of Chessy-les-Mines, near Lyon, in France, where magnificent specimens were found in 1824. For thousands of years azurite has been noted for its use in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as colored pigment for paint and as eye makeup, the Egyptians considered a sacred stone azurite helping them communicate with spirits, Greeks called azurite "Kuanos" meaning blue and cyan which derives the word.
