ETYMOLOGY: From the greek pir = fire and louis = yeast, as in ancient times was used to remove the greenish glass that gave him the presence of iron components.

MINERALOGY: It usually occurs in almost all kinds of rocks and mineral deposits, as a result of alteration of minerals containing manganese, even if it is present by partially substituting another element or as an impurity. It occurs in hydrothermal veins, contains 63.2% manganese, the manganese dioxide is an oxide of manganese classified within the group of rutile, is often found associated with limonite, hematite, quartz, manganite, psilomelane and other mineral oxides of iron and manganese.


MYTHOLOGY: crystals up to 20 mm are known in Horní Blatná (Czech Republic).
