ETYMOLOGY: From the American mineralogist W. E.Hidden
 
CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Monoclinic

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary

MINERAL CLASS: Inosilicates, family of the espodumena.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: LiAl [Si2O6] + Ca, Mg, Mn, Na.

HARDNESS: 6.5 - 7 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: Madagascar, China, Brazil.
 
MINERALOGY: It is a variety of spodumene, it is formed exclusively in pegmatites of lithium-rich acidic magmatic solutions, the yellowish greenish tone, is due to Fe3 +. , often have inclusions oriented in parallel in the form of tubing or healing cracks.


MYTHOLOGY: The first specimens of the octopus variety of spodumene were recovered around 1879 near the small settlement of White Plains, (North Carolina). According to contemporary accounts, a young man named Lackey caught the eye of J.A.D. Stephenson, a local trader and mineral collector. Initially, it was thought that the yellow to yellow-green hiding places were twins. Stephenson brought the discovery to the attention of exploration geologist William Earl Hidden, who had been commissioned by Thomas Edison to find any platinum source in North Carolina. Hidden samples sent from the strange green material to J. Lawrence Smith, a leading chemist and mineralogist from Louisville, Kentucky. Smith correctly identified specimens as a variety of spodumene, and called them "hidenite" in honor of Hidden.
