ROCK SALT

ETYMOLOGY: It comes from the Greek "Halos" which means stone salt or rock salt.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Cubic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.  

CLASS MINERAL: Halides

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: NaCl.

HARDNESS: 2.5 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: Himalayan mountains of Pakistan.

 

MINERALOGY: The salt deposits were formed about 150 million years to the Jurassic period. In the early days of Earth's continents they were united in what is known as Pangea. According to geologic time it progressed parts of the earth rose and some seas dried up. Himalayan salt is only sodium chloride with other elements such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, sulfur oxide, iron, manganese, fluorine, iodine, zinc, chromium, copper, cobalt and gold.

 

MYTHOLOGY: The Himalayan salt comes from the salt mine in Khewra (Jhelum District), The Egyptians used the salt to embalm mummies. So it is used as a preservative for more than 3,500 years ago. Our "salary" is derived from the salt. Apparently the Roman Empire paid its legionaries with salt (essential for food preservation at that time) and then derived the word.
