MALACHITE CHRYSOCOLLA

ETYMOLOGY:  MALAQUITA = It comes from the greek malache = mallow ( the color mauve like the leaves of this plant), also of greek malakos = soft (for its low hardness). CHRYSOCOLLA = chrysos comes from greek that is "gold" and koala "glue", as the Greeks used this mineral for welding pieces of gold.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Monoclinic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Secondary.

CLASS MINERAL: Silicates / carbonates.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: (Cu, Al) 4H4 (OH) 8 Si4O10 · nH2O + Cu2 [(OH) 2 I CO3].

HARDNESS: 4 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: Russia, Zaire, Chile.

 

MINERALOGY: Originates from the oxidation zone of copper deposits (associated with azurite, cuprite and native copper) when silicon-rich surface waters dissolve copper from the rock, is a secondary mineral formation.
