HEULANDITE

ETYMOLOGY: From the english mineral collector John Henry Heuland (1778-1856).

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Monoclinic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.

CLASS MINERAL: Silicates.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: (Ca, Na) 2 Al2Si7O18.6H2O (Ba, K, Sr).

HARDNESS:  3 - 4 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: India, Iceland.

 

MINERALOGY: The heulandite is a hydrous silicate belonging to the group of zeolites, it characterized in that the three-dimensional framework of silica and aluminum tetaedros of hydrothermal origin listed gas fill cavities origin that have formed in rocks such as basalt and andesite, during the consolidation of the magma.


MYTHOLOGY: The heulandita was confused for a long time with Stilbite, it was not until 1822 that it was recognized as a new mineral species.
