SCOLECITE

ETYMOLOGY: It comes from the Greek skolec (worm) in reference to the form that flame burning it with a lighter or torch.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM:  Monoclinic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.

CLASS MINERAL: Tectosilicates.

MINERAL ELEMENTS CHEMICAL FORMULACa (Si3Al2) O10 · 3H2O.

HARDNESS: 5-6  on the Mohs scale.

MINERALOGY: The scolecite hydrothermal origin is shown filling the cavities of gaseous origin that have formed in basaltic rocks during the consolidation process of magma forming geodes or drusen. The scolecite is a hydrous silicate belonging to the group of zeolites, characterized in that the three-dimensional framework of silica and aluminum tetaedros leaves large gaps where a number of cations (Ca, Na, K, H2O) are interchangeable lodging between if under certain temperature conditions.


MYTHOLOGY: It is said that reassures scolecite aggressive animals and children with violent tendencies.
