AEGIRINE

ETYMOLOGY: The name comes from Aegir, a Scandinavian sea god.
 

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Monoclinic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.

MINERAL CLASS: Inosilicates

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: NaFe+3Si2O6

HARDNESS: 6 - 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

MINERALOGY: Egirina is a relatively rare petrographic mineral, found mainly in sodium-rich and silica-poor rocks, such as synaites and nephrotic phonolites. It appears associated with the orthoses, feldespatoides, augita and amphiboles sodium. It also appears in some metamorphic rocks associated with glaucofana or riebeckita. Its crystals are slender prismatic with sharp ends, sometimes they are fibrous aggregates, it is brown to green.


 
MYTHOLOGY: Its name comes from n'Ægir, the sea god in Norse mythology, since one of the first minerals described was found near the sea. It was discovered in 1821 in Rundemyr, Norway (at that time was given the name of acmita); was named as Egirina in 1835 by the priest and minerologist Hans Morten Thrane Esmark. The specimen named by Thrane was found at AVEN, Langesundsfjorden, Norway.
