FLINT

ETYMOLOGY: It is a generic term used to designate a sedimentary rock composed almost exclusively of substantially pure microcrystalline silica.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Trigonal / Amorphous.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Secondary.

CLASS MINERAL: Cryptocrystalline variety of quartz. silicates

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: SiO2.

HARDNESS: 3.5 - 4 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: Northwestern Europe, such as Switzerland, Britain and Belgium, North America, Australia, Spain.

 

MINERALOGY: The flint, if it consists of pure silica, appears colorless or translucent, but is usually white, yellow, pink or reddish-brown due to the presence of inclusions, and has an opaque appearance. Many flint contain impurities such as calcite, dolomite, etc. It comes in the form of nodules, concretions or lentejón contained in carbonate rocks or stratifications that form deposits. The latter can be regular or irregular, wavy layers strata. Within the chert are often fossils often constituted by single-celled organisms such as radiolarians and diatoms, or sponges with siliceous exoskeleton.
